Hurricane Irma continues to be a strong CAT 4 hurricane located about 225 miles South Miami, FL. The projection for Pierce County are that this storm will travel a little further to our west near about Valdosta. At that location, the storm will have weakened to a strong tropical storm and may even still have some CAT 1 strength. We will see strong winds, rainfall accumulations between 8-15 inches, and a significant threat for tornadoes during the evening hours.

Please make preparations for these dangerous conditions which will be occurring overnight. If you are remaining home, be sure to inform someone away from you where your interior shelter will be.

We are still being told to expect sustained winds of between 40 and 60MPH with higher gusts. Please continue to take extreme caution with this storm.

The storm is expected to be in our area beginning as early as sunset Sunday and will continue through as late as sunrise Tuesday morning.

We will be providing another update at 4:00 PM Saturday, September 09, 2017.

Beginning on Saturday, Pierce County will have four “Good Samaritan Shelters” throughout the county. Another shelter will open at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Evacuees should come prepared with bedding, toiletries, food, and medications. Residents with medical issues should use the Red Cross Shelter located at Ware County High School, 700 Victory Dr., Waycross.

PLEASE NOTE: The NFC building and Pierce County Schools are NOT shelters.

People living in mobile homes or unsafe structures need to move to a safe location before 2 p.m. on Sunday.

These shelters are first come, first served. Spots cannot be reserved. All shelters are ADA compliant.
